The town of Biarritz, France, is more than just a popular surfing spot. Although world renowned for its top class standard and beaches, Biarritz also offers a casino and two relaxing golf courses.
City areas
Biarritz is famous for its coast, so the main places the tourists gather are the beaches. But if you get bored of the beach, the town also has two golf courses not to mention a wonderful view of the Basque landscape.
Transportation
As a small town Biarritz can be easily discovered by foot, being very pedestrian friendly. However for those who don’t enjoy walking much there is an excellent bus network, which include Bayonne and Anglet.
Events
The main events in Biarritz are of sporting nature. Apart from the annual surfing festival, Biarritz is also known for horse races, pelote Basque and rugby competitions. There are only two exhibitions held in Biarritz, both of scientific nature.
Attractions
In spite of being a surfing town, Biarritz is also a historical one as well. Napoleon the third taking an interest in this town once, when he wanted a fortification built for the seawall of the Port du Refuge.
History and civilization
The earliest mention of the small Basque town is in 840, when Vikings invading Gascony settled where Biarritz is situated today. In the 1800’s the town took an immense economical leap as Europe’s royal houses started vacationing here.
Restaurants and nightlife
The nightlife of Biarritz is quite select. From restaurants and bars to nightclubs and casinos, the town, although small, has it all. If you’re a night person then you definitely won’t get bored in Biarritz.

Every year on the beach of Côte des Basques (Basque Coast) the Hawaiian spirit of Aloha makes its presence felt through the festivities and competitions of the Biarritz Surf Festival.
